Swim Instructor Courses

Do you want to teach swimming? Gain the knowledge to teach and evaluate skills and strokes in an aquatic setting. Take one or all three of the Instructor programs and become certified through the Red Cross and/or Lifesaving society to teach people of all ages how to swim and be safe around an aquatic setting.

The Lifesaving Swim Instructor

The Lifesaving Swim Instructor course prepares the candidates with acquire proven teaching methods, a variety of stroke development drills and correction techniques. Candidates will be certified to teach the Lifesaving Society’s Swim for Life program which includes Parent and Tot, Preschool, Swimmer, Adult, and Fitness.

Prerequisites

16 years of age (by end of course) and Bronze Cross

The Lifesaving Instructor

The Lifesaving Instructor course prepares individuals to organize, plan, teach and evaluate lifesaving and first aid skills and resuscitation techniques in the Society’s lifesaving and first aid awards. Because the Society’s first aid courses are recognized by Ontario’s Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB), the Society complies with WSIB’s request that only “first aid instructors” teach WSIB-approved courses. Successful candidates on the Lifesaving Instructor course receive two certification cards: Lifesaving Instructor and Emergency First Aid Instructor. Current Lifesaving Instructors are certified to teach: Canadian Swim Patrol Program, Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, Lifesaving Fitness, Distinction
Current Emergency First Aid Instructors are certified to teach and certify candidates in: Basic First Aid, Emergency First Aid and CPR-A, B.

Prerequisites

16 years of age (by end of course) and Bronze Cross.

Red Cross Instructor

Candidates will be certified to teach the Red Cross Swim Program (Preschool, Swim Kids, Adult and Teens). The course is taught through a blended learning module that includes: swim strokes and skill evaluation, online training, practice teaching, and classroom training.

Prerequisites

  • 15 years of age by the end of the course;
  • Emergency first aid
  • Ability to swim and preform the skills at a Red Cross swim kids 10 level. (Assessment of the skills will be done at the beginning of the course)
  • Recommended, Bronze Cross or NLS certification (need not be current).

Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Transfer Course

If you are a swim instructor from another agency (Lifesaving or YMCA) and wish to receive your Red Cross Instructors you must attend a transfer course and complete the online module and teaching experience hours.

Davina’s Swim House Instructor Certification

This course is for certified Swim Instructors wishing to teach at Davina’s Swim House. This course teaches the specific DSH learn to swim program. Candidates will learn specialized techniques specific to DSH.

Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor or Red Cross Water Safety Instructor

Become a Lifesaving and Swim Instructor Package

This package includes; Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, Emergency First Aid, Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor, Lifesaving Society Lifesaving Instructor, Emergency First Aid Instructor, and Davina’s Swim House Instructor certifications. Candidates can choose from any of our courses within the 2018/2019 Leadership schedule. All courses must be completed by the end of August 2019.
